Nuclear Weapons in Iran & North Korea:
An Essay

by Michael McKown

The time is fast approaching when we will see nuclear weapons in Iran and North Korea. The bad guys are doing their best to assure a mass destruction capability. President Bush has invaded and largely disarmed Iraq by now, but there are others seeking to develop MWDs of their own. Scary!

Bush needs to think this through If the United States, in concert with any reluctant, cobbled-together coalition, seeks to destroy the MWD capabilities of Iran and North Korea, this will only solidify the determination of these people to, as they see it, protect themselves from the USA, the Big Bully of the World.

I suspect the ultimate outcome of trying to police the world in this fashion is to get hit ourselves with MWDs. If we act alone, or with only a few partners, I fear the USA will be successfully attacked and hundreds of thousands will die. Will that result in a nuclear attack upon, say, Iran? Quite possibly. At the moment, I see this effort to dictate to the world what weapons they can possess as having a catastrophic outcome for the whole world.

This is a problem for everyone, not just the USA, the UK and a few others. It is high time for the United Nations to become a parent to its member nations, not just a body for debate. It is essential that the UN act firmly to ban certain classes of weapons, be able to conduct inspections as they wish, and enforce such a ban through use of force. To repeat: The world needs to act to ban these weapons, and enforce such a ban. That way, we in the USA remove ourselves from the role as World Bully, and reduce the likelihood of being targeted. After all, it's one thing to draw the attention of the USA. It's quite another to draw the attention of the USA and everybody else.
